Answers to the Concussion Management Knowledge Quiz:

1. After football, do you know which sport has the most reported concussions?
Answer.  Girls’ Soccer

Doctors and coaches cite multiple factors for the high number of brain injuries in girl’s soccer. Among them:

  • Girls' necks and heads are smaller than their male counterparts, giving their brains less protection.
  • Inspired by iconic heroes like Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and Abby Wambach — plus luredby potential college scholarships — girls are playing more aggressively, sometimes recklessly so.
  • When in midair, boys appear to have better spatial awareness, recognizing potential collisions and avoiding them.
  • Girls may be more inclined to report concussions than boys.
  • “None of (these factors) are conclusive,” said Dr. William Perry, the associate director of neuropsychiatry and behavioral medicine at UC San Diego Health System. “While it’s a hypothesis, we just don’t know for sure.”

2. Why is baseline testing important?
Answer: All of the above.  Baseline testing is an important component to a comprehensive concussion management program.

  • Provides the most accurate and reliable benchmark for post-injury comparison.
  • Provides valuable information regarding an athlete’s capabilities before an injury occurs.
  • Baseline results may indicate an undiagnosed medical condition for which treatment may be needed before an athlete begins their sport.

3. What are the three pillars of Baseline Concussion Assessment?

Answer:  Cognitive, Balance, Symptoms Checklist

  • NCAA Guidelines - Concussion or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) in the Athlete
      • At a minimum, the baseline assessment should consist of the use of a symptoms
checklist and standardized cognitive and balance assessments.

  • NATA Position Statement - Management of Sport-Related Concussion
      • Baseline measurements of neuropsychological and postural stability are strongly
recommended for comparing with post-injury measurements

4. Why is Balance Assessment vital in a concussion management program?
Answer:  All of the above.

  • Large negative effects in postural sway are often identified at both immediate and follow-up assessment points, demonstrating the need for assessment of postural control as part of a concussion protocol.
  • Balance testing has become an accepted objective measure in the evaluation of athlete’s with concussion.
  • It’s considered ‘Best Practice’ by the NATA, NCAA and Internal Symposium on Concussion.
  • Data from objective measures of postural stability is a critical component in determining severity of injury and post-injury recovery.

5.
Biodex plays an essential role in concussion management because the Biodex Balance Assessment Program...
Answer
:  All of the above.

  • …provides measurable objective data which identifies and tracks disturbances in balance and the three associated sensory systems.
  • …is used to determine treatment plans, measure progress, and track recovery.
  • …performs the Clinical Test of Sensory Integration of Balance (CTSIB), an acceptedstandardized balance assessment.
  • …provides objective documentation including detailed baseline and post-injury summary reports, progress reports, and comparisons to normative data.
