“We chose to use the Biodex BioSway as our primary vestibular assessment tool based on its simplicity for our clinical staff. Clinicians performing the balance test at the Competitive Edge Sports Screening Day had never used the Biodex equipment before, but with minimal training on the morning of the event, these clinicians quickly became pros, each performing 25-30 baseline tests every hour. The Biodex testing, paired with the ImPACT™ cognitive testing, is a powerful tool to determine when an athlete is ready to return to play following a concussion.
From a professional standpoint, I’m very familiar with Biodex and their products. Their service and equipment have been great in assisting us in providing proper patient care as well as an outstanding patient experience. We chose to use the Biodex BioSway based on the previous experience in using Biodex equipment and services by many of our clinicians. They were very comfortable in the utilization and ease of use of the system and applying it to our patients.
Biodex has been a wonderful partner for our Competitive Edge Sports Screening Day in the Charlotte area. Their service is excellent! They offered both their expertise in coordination leading up to the event as well as on-site assistance to our clinicians during the event.”

“Aurora Sports Medicine Institute has been using the Biodex Balance System SD for balance assessment in our concussion management program since June 2011. We already had the Biodex Balance System SD in our therapy unit for a couple of years being used primarily for physical therapy and rehabilitation. It was like finding a hidden treasure, knowing that we had a balance assessment solution already in place and could now repurpose it for use in our concussion management program. However, I never like to follow anything blindly. It took us a good 3-4 months to fully research all components of our concussion program before we actually put anything into place.
We decided to move forward with Biodex for objective balance assessment based on their reputation and the relationship we had with them and their product. The efficiency and quickness, the ease of reading reports, and the results that we got with the Balance System SD were phenomenal. We knew we couldn’t get any better than what we already had.”

“I have used the Biodex Balance System for two years with a wide variety of patients ranging from geriatrics to professional athletes. It is a great resource to have in the clinic when dealing with hip, knee, and ankle dysfunction patients, and is especially beneficial with the athletic population.
As a rule, athletes are very competitive and hate to be shown their functional deficits. The Biodex Balance System shows their proprioceptive weakness and challenges them to improve. The Balance System test mode provides a standard baseline to evaluate the athlete in a static or dynamic nature. The computer generates a print-out of the standard deviations of correctional mistakes and the percentage of time the athlete stays in a particular quadrant. It then compares this to normative balance data that Biodex has provided. This allows the objective measures of the athlete to be trained, and then easily reevaluated and assessed to quantify proprioceptive improvement.
The Biodex Balance System is the only piece of equipment in our clinic that can objectively measure and compare to normative data the proprioceptive deficits of a patient. It also works well as a simple training tool, providing a challenging and competitive way to motivate athletes.
In my opinion, the Biodex Balance System is a very cost-effective choice of capital equipment for most physical therapy or athletic training facilities. I would highly recommend this product to any orthopedic clinic, athletic training room, rehab clinic or balance clinic because of the true objective measurements and normative data the system offers to both patient and clinician.”

“We are extremely excited about getting started with our Biodex Concussion Varsity Program here at St. Edward's University in Austin, TX. The portable BioSway static balance training and testing device that we use with the program is perfect for our facility since we have limited space. The chance to have a portable unit allows us some extra freedom in terms of taking it into the locker room or finding a small area in the athletic training room to set up when we need it.
“Obviously, with all the recent research and concern about concussions, and new demands arising in that area from the N.C.A.A., we want to have a well-defined and proven protocol in place. The Biodex Concussion Management Program is just what we needed and it will play a big part in managing our student-athletes that suffer concussions. One of the most exciting aspects of the program is that it should help ease the minds of both our coaches and athletic training staff as they consider when a student-athlete is ready to return to action. We always have subjective measures such as headaches or fogginess to consider with concussed student-athletes, but now we'll be able to back up our assessments with something more concrete when we speak to the coaching staff. By considering more pieces to the puzzle, such as the subjective measures of symptoms, impact testing results and now the more quantitative BioSway data, we'll be able to back up the idea that a student-athlete is not yet ready to return to the field with real evidence that should ultimately improve communication with the coaching staff.
“Another big plus with the program is that it can help motivated student-athletes better understand that there are additional factors beyond the headaches and "fogginess" that need to be considered before return to play. For example, if balance is compromised, that simply can't be ignored. With the reports and objective data in hand, we can do a better job of educating student-athletes and coaches that, while it may be possible to play through a lot of little bumps and bruises, it's not wise to think a student-athlete can simply suck it up and play through a concussion or head injury. Anything that can help us get that point across is going to be a major help.”

“From what I've seen so far, the Biodex Concussion Management Program is very simple to implement, software friendly and takes a logical approach to the evaluation of concussion patients. I very much like that it provides a nice graphical output and includes a database program that allows users to easily view the various measurements that are part of the protocol.
“At The University of Tampa, we are broadly implementing the Biodex program with our teams for baseline testing of athletes, particularly for our higher risk sports. The baselines established will be used with post-injury evaluations to provide another diagnostic tool in our toolbox when an athlete is unfortunate enough to suffer a concussion. We'll use the balance data and reports generated by the Play It SAFE® protocol in conjunction with neuro-cognitive testing and subjective evaluations to help determine when players are ready to return to action or when they should stay on the sidelines to prevent putting their health at further risk.
“Although we are just getting started with our own athletic baseline testing, we are also planning to reach out to local high schools to see if they would like to have their sports teams tested under the Play It SAFE® protocol. I think that would be one way we, as a university, can give back to the local community.”

“Play It SAFE® is a guideline that respects the role of all parties involved.
This is a protocol that can be driven by a physician, physical therapist and/or Certified Athletic Trainers.”

“I used the Biodex BioSway and Biodex Concussion Management Program this past fall football season. Although we went concussion free, it was comforting to know I had the Biodex balance test data available because it gave us another tool if needed for the RTP decisions. Plus it quantifies the person's balance with hard data rather than relying on the subjective nature of the balance testing in the other assessments.”

“I'm very happy with the new Biodex Concussion Management Program. Here at the Sports Medicine Biodynamics Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, we have tried some other balance screening tools in the past but haven't been thrilled with the results. In fact, for some devices, we've questioned the reliability of the data generated. Right now, however, we are very excited with the results from our Biodex BioSway System. Over the past six to 12 months we have made an effort to fully implement the BioSway System and the Biodex Concussion Management Program and, in fact, we are well on our way to making the BioSway the only balance assessment tool we use.
“The major advantage of the Biodex BioSway System and the Concussion Management Program is their objectivity. The tools that we've used in the past have generally relied on the subjective evaluation of the treating clinician to determine if there are deficits in the balance, but the beauty of this new combination is that it gives you very objective results of subtle changes in postural sway. This makes for a much more sensitive tool to evaluate if some of these patients actually have deficits.
“One thing that we especially appreciate about the program is that the software is very intuitive and easy to navigate. We've used it to do screenings on several very large sports teams and found the entire procedure really quite manageable. Because the software is so user friendly, administering the test is easy - and the system generates data in a very reliable fashion.
“In terms of the protocol, we've been very interested in the variability of movement that we see in concussion patients. The BioSway really helps us zero in on that as it shows the variability of balance while the patient is standing on the testing platform. We've found that just as important as how far a person moves from the center of the platform during testing, is how much variability of motion is involved. Because you can evaluate these numbers consistently using either the BioSway or the Biodex Balance SD, this program gives us a portable option with comparable data. That is a big plus and we are very pleased with this aspect.
“From a research perspective we've screened several hundred patients for balance, plus a few hundred more using the concussion protocol. We absolutely see the Biodex Concussion Management Program as becoming more and more important in our plans as concern over this injury continues to accelerate. We believe the BioSway and Balance System SD are important tools in being able to access the changes in postural sway. The cost effectiveness and reliability of the data generated by the program provides good information and the portability to set up where we need to go. It's a reliable and effective combination that provides us with very objective data that, in combination with more traditional subjective measures, helps us assess concussion injuries to the best of our ability.”
